March 2015

Advertised as “legal weed,” an emerging family of drugs is flying off the shelves of deli, convenience and candy stores in East Harlem. Scientifically classified as synthetic marijuana, but commonly known as “K2” or “Spice,” the popular products mimic the active hallucinogen in marijuana, THC.

Several studies have linked the chemical compounds found in synthetic THC to serious adverse short-term and long-term effects on the brain. These effects include problems retaining attention, difficulty learning, problem solving, understanding language, decision-making and short and long-term memory loss.
